Sam Young, CPGA Professional
In the 50 years of my playing and teaching career, I have garnered many ideas from the leading teachers from around the world, along with the intensive training I received from my mentors, which has helped me to develop my own straightforward, efficient and successful method of teaching the golf swing.
I have found that those who have learned and practiced the proper fundamentals of the golf swing, and are taught the basics of course management, generally have the most enjoyment on the golf course over the long-term.
Whether you are five years old or 75 or anywhere in between, you can learn to swing a golf club and learn to play an enjoyable game of golf. Each year, I teach 80 Juniors and 60 adults on a season-long basis as I have found that the quick fix method rarely helps the recreational golfer unless he/she is already a low handicap golfer.
Along with teaching the technical aspects of the swing, the physical, nutritional and mental aspects of the game are a high priority in my teaching philosophy.

Begin to learn a healthy game – a game that will intrigue you for the rest of your life.
Joel Tervit, Associate Professional and Tournament Coordinator
I have lived in Shelburne for the better part of 30 years and been an active member in the community in minor hockey, baseball & golf. I first learned the game of golf from Mr. Young at some of his after school programs for juniors. Golf quickly became a love of mine & in the early 90’s I was a representative of The Shelburne Golf & Country Club on the Pepsi Tour.
In 2003, I moved to Jasper, Alberta and worked in the back shop of the #1 golf resort in Canada, The Fairmont Jasper Park Lodge. After moving out west for 6 months, I had fallen in love with the mountains and ended up staying for 3 years. I moved back to Ontario and enrolled in the Professional Golf Management program at Georgian College. During my time at Georgian I was required to do a co-op placement and chose to work in beautiful Muskoka. I worked at The Rock Golf Club as tournament coordinator for 2 seasons and then went to Muskoka Bay for my final year as Pro Shop Manager.
In 2010, I started working as a sales representative for The Golf Channel & Golfnow in the Niagara/Windsor region. Golfnow is an online tee time distributor & advertiser owned by NBC Universal & The Golf Channel.
In 2014, I became the General Manager of The Wingham Golf & Curling Club. This was a great opportunity and I was responsible for the day to day operations of the facility. We hosted many golf tournaments, weddings, retirement parties & bonspiels. Wingham was a very special place to work as I was born in Wingham and it was the birth place for both my parents as well.
I guess you could say I have now come full circle & returned to the place my passion for the game of golf began. I’m thrilled to joined this incredible team here at The Shelburne Golf & Country Club as Associate Professional and Tournament Coordinator. We have many great things planned for the upcoming season and I can’t wait to meet all the guests & members.
